blondell love lehocki - the old man that sat lyrics

Loading...

several times i had walked by the old man that sat on the river bank retaining wall

he always sat there quietly fishing with a pole and a string attached. from a distance i watched as he prepared each hook with a worm that squirmed and oozed on that hook

this day i walked up to him and silently stood. in a low muttering of a voice i could hear him whisper soft prayers to himself

and; like any kid would, asked “mister, what are you praying for”? i knew he was praying cause i had heard my mamma pray many times before

slowly and with a faint smile, he uttered back, “son, i find my comfort in the lord”. he returned his gaze towards the water, just watching…

…watching for that pole to move; even the slightest, with years of learned patience

in a moment of thought i decided to spend time with him. my mamma wouldn’t mind. she was working late at that time

the evening started to roll in as they both sat watching that pole and waiting for some sort of sign

the river’s water gently rippled to and fro splashing against the moss covered edges of the river bank

wet moss always smelled so musky in the evening air

they sat there in quiet until the rains came

the little boy helped him pack his things up and they started to part their ways

the little boy started his journey home and the old man headed south

the little boy turned to bid the old man farewell, and the old man was almost gone

running behind him he cried, “hey old man, can i walk you home”?

the old man turned and with a wry smile said, “little man, these woods are my home.”

tears came to the little boy’s eyes and the said, “old man i can take you home with me! we got room and i know mamma won’t mind.”

the old man turned down his offer, and that little boy fished with that old man until his dying day, when he sent the old man on his way….

…his way to the pearly gates of heaven. he gave that old man his undying love

goodbye “old man”

a grown man
