brian duricy - please stop comparing other rappers to young thug lyrics
young thug has frequently inspired me to write about him in any capacity possible. none have seen the light of day, but that’s about to change for one definitive reason: i’ve been wrong this whole time
as the self-avowed “world’s biggest young thug fan”, i’ve collected every single second of music dropped by thugger (or whoever drops his music) from the moment he stepped onto the hip-hop scene until the present day. and knowing him, there’s going to be another song or verse waiting by the end of this piece. but as i have eagerly followed every movement of his career, i began to notice similarities in the obsession i had with those of my older hip-hop head counterparts; scrolling through various conversations on rap g*nius, it struck me that my maturity and thug’s have paralleled one another in the same manner of cam’ron and gucci mane for the elder statesmen of the site. and his style, which has most frequently been linked to the drug-addled lil wayne phase, but also to the aforementioned artists, carries an inimitable quality that manifested itself prominently on his latest full release, 1017 thug 2.
young thug doesn’t care one bit about rapping
this revelation dawned on me as i trudged through the ten tracks – one of which already appeared on the original 1017 thug – desperately searching for another immaculate hip-hop moment from my favorite artist. i found none, yet i am currently on my third listening through of the tape, fully immersing myself in the pure nihilism of it all. whereas cam’ron’s goofy gibberish was always backed up with a hardened street persona, thug slangs syllables together for no clear purpose. lil wayne’s carefree yelps and sp-ced-out concepts are still just that: concepts. young thug’s absurdities are more dada sound poems than weezy homages. and gucci mane’s wild drug escapades wishes to impart the image of a criminal mastermind regardless of the eccentricities. thugger discusses drug sales as casually as he dons dresses; to him, intoning importance is not a lyrical requisite
please stop comparing him to other artists, because they all share a purpose. any argument that can be made of intentions in his music are easily contradicted, much like reading two separate p-ssages by friedrich nietzsche. 1017 thug 2 is a frustrating, droning work. and it will only further alienate the hip-hop community regarding the most exciting artist we have today. stereogum will probably grace this with their mixtape of the week label, and pitchfork will slap a 6.2 on it just for good measure. the world will continue spinning as if it was never released. because that’s just how young thug wants it to be, and you can’t say that about any other artist
