chapstick - opposites lyrics

[verse i: chapstick]
now just… come to a world i already have to
in a mostly white high school, the setting: a cl-ssroom
in a theology cl-ss sits james, the delinquent
drug dealing frequent, troubles no secret
he comes from money, dad’s an architect
his mom taught him well, but still his morals aren’t in check
he’s never on the straight and narrow ‘cause the parties tempt
keeping pipes and weapons ’round his room like they’re his pets
and james loves starting fights, in trouble all the time
here he is, sitting in cl-ss, drugs and money are on his mind
he rests his head on his hands, leans back, yawns, sighs
looks right, his heart stops, something caught his eye
couple desks down, there’s the perfect ten
great grades, pretty face, too much worth for him
her name is ashley, she’d only hang with certain friends
and james prayed all day that she may one day flirt with him
weeks went by, he’d see her, his heart sang
he’d skip his other cl-sses but this one? he’d start staying
and he would smile stupid like kids at an arcade
and then the two were placed together when the seating chart changed
he’d try to act cool, but his head was reeling
greetings lead to conversation, both developed feelings
he knew that he was bad, but feelings were too strong
he’d tell her he’d do bad things, would go out and do wrong
the more he’d try try to warn, she’d say “i like you james
plus my parents always taught me to try new things.”
and he would always warn, but all that she would tell him…
was that she loved him for him and wanted that rebellion… like

[hook: fiona steiwer]
just embracing your hand means constricting my blood flow
and every hug, a suffocation, it’s something you must know
and the problem is, there’s no way we’ll be stopping this
i guess we are deathly attracted to our opposites

[verse ii: chapstick]
so now they both found the ones they are attracted to
james would act a fool, and they would hang out after school
the meek heart of ash began hardening
in the party scene, quit sports, no more varsity
and didn’t hang with good friends anymore
whenever they would call, she would always hit ignore
and james would deal drugs and still fight often
ash would say “don’t hurt yourself,” he’d say “i promise.”
both 16, he could make some money honest…
ways, but liked his rep, so he didn’t wanna stop it
sale of ecstasy began to skyrocket
and ash started loving this life, so chaotic
they’d go to the mall together, she would go shop and…
he would use the money from his ecstasy profits
one day she took james into a hot topic
showed him a jacket she liked, and then he bought it
he loved how it looked on her, so new
she was no longer his opposite, that was old news
she changed fast, he stayed the same
but they really liked each other, neither one was playing games
and one day, while at a park, she said “don’t be embarr-ssed
my dad wonders about you, will you and meet my parents?”
james agreed and then later in that week…
he went to meet the family to make ash happy
and the mom was kind, dad asked of his intentions
he gave the right answers, didn’t mention his detentions
convinced her parents he had sense and that he wasn’t reckless
then as he left he asked if she would join him for breakfast
the next day, a sat-rday, she was at the door
he opened it, they ate, and talked back and forth
he said he had a question and put down his fork
“will you come and party next weekend?” she said, “of course.”

[hook: fiona steiwer]

[verse iii: chapstick]
so then the party approached, he helped her come up with alibis
told her how to act and not to tell her dad she lied
he said he was dealing, she was fine with that
although a stable life is probably what she’d like to have…
she gave up all her prior aspirations doing new stuff
claiming it was all simply in the name of true love
still had never done drugs, he didn’t mind
after all she never did interfere with his grind
day before the party, he picked up the ecs
the dealer said “check this out, this is something fresh.”
“what do you mean?” james asked with a smile on
“compared to other batches, this is twice as strong.”
he went home, satisfied with his product
he knew he’d make cash at the party if he brought some
friends picked him up the very next day
went to ash’s house, ready to get paid
he told her dad they were going on a date
he said “alright james, just don’t be gone too late.”
they picked up more people, intelligence got shorter
and ash wore the jacket that james bought for her
she wasn’t used to people telling her “hit this,”
so she sat around in her hot pink lipstick
james loved how she looked with that lipstick on
as they rolled around bumping drake’s hit songs
at the party, he broke out the ecs
and there was cocaine and s-x and like 4 pounds of sess
he said he’d be right back, and headed to the bathroom
left alone, ash got into a bad mood
he wandered off into the people and the trap tunes
he couldn’t see her, but oh well, he’d be back soon
living life, thinking nothing’s evil
he made it to the bathroom through crowds of drunken people
he came back, she acted strange
lively, wondered what had made the rapid change
he saw her lip swollen, he goes “what happened?”
she goes “what are you talking about? just come dancing.”
once so meek in all of her heart and mind
that was all shattered when she’d freak and start to grind
he -ssumed she got drunk and said “let me help you,”
as he lead her intoxicated self into a guest room

[verse iv: chapstick]
so now they’re in the guest room, together, alone
and it’s late, her dad’s wondering when she’ll be home
he removed her clothes said, “hey its just you and me,”
and took advantage of her body like she did school opportunities
they fell asleep together, he opened his eyes
and looked at her face to see that broken disguise
he saw the lovely school girl who had potential
who he broke, now in life she would have to settle
so remorseful, to take it back is all what he wanted
to tell her that he would change, make that a promise
but as far as sorries, his chance? he lost it
eyelids wouldn’t open, no pulse, a mouth of vomit
james was hardly managing, stammering, acting frantically
thinking of her family, how hateful inside her dad would be
he ran for help and was met with the surprise
of her lipstick smeared by, and jacket right beside…
the ecstasy he brought, he remembered the night before
when he returned, she didn’t have her jacket like before
she took his drugs, he’d have to face the music
she put her jacket on the table, tripped and ran into it
lied about her fat lip, thought he won’t notice
he recalled the dealer saying that this was so potent
he could have made money working honest at the mall
greed drove him to ecstasy and adderall
he fell to his knees, what’s the worth of selling these?
for quick cash through ruining lives? getting felonies?
he saw the party scene for what it was, it wrecked him utterly
‘cause what’s the point of cash if love is murdered by a money scheme?
