charles j. adams iii - the dream lyrics

Loading...

[verse 1]
my ears do ring and my heart does sing
when a steam train whistle blows
and anywhere that train is bound
it’s there i too would go
i had a dream the other night
interrupted by this sound
it was the whistle of a southbound freight
rolling through my old hometown
i pinched myself, yeah, still alive
and hearing what i heard
there was one toot and then another
and then, by gosh, a third
they echoed through my mind
just like a childhood memory
the dreamy call of an iron horse
was reaching out to me

[chorus 1]
i know i’m dreaming
but could it really be?
it started seeming
that train was there for me

[verse 2]
that choo+choo chugged through a foggy mist
and stopped right where i stood
i’d hop inside that locomotive
if i only could
but this i knew was nothing more
than a wishful little dream
that toot and choo+choo couldn’t really
be what it had seemed
but then, a dapper man walked up
and tipped his hat to me
well, in my sleepy state, i wondered
who this man could be
he said he came to give my dream
a special nice reward
and with a smile upon his face
he bellowed, “all aboard!”
[chorus 2]
was this for real
or just a fantasy?
“wow, what a deal!”
i shouted out with glee

[verse 3]
i climbed inside the cabin
took a look at all the stuff
and then i felt that choo+choo train
begin to huff and puff
well, in my dream, a red bandana
fluttered from my neck
and over my shoulder, there was a cord
and i figured, “what the heck?”
i wrapped my fingers ’round that cord
and slowly pulled it down
and as i did, i heard that
sweet and old familiar sound
with that, the locomotive started
chugging down the rails
i gave that cord another tug
i listened to the wail

[chorus 3]
i made it whistle
yes, i’m an engineer
give it a listen
and tell me what you hear
[verse 4]
the old conductor looked at me
and tipped his hat once more
he told me it was time to leave
and he vanished in a roar
yes, dreams, alas, must always end
for every girl and boy
i was rustled from my slumber
by a m+ffled rumbling noise
i wiped the sleep dust from my eyes
and listened closely to
the clear refrain of a distant train
and a plaintive “woo+woo+woo!”
there’s just one thing about that sound
that made me think that day
the closest railroad tracks to me
are many miles away

[chorus 4]
i got to fearing
that this was still a dream
what i was hearing
was not what it might seem

[verse 5]
but soon, i heard another whistle
hooting in the night
i went to my window and looked outside
to see a wondrous sight
up in the dark but moonlit sky
beneath a thousand stars
a big black locomotive pulled
a hundred railroad cars
white puffs of smoke rose from the stack
and i can faintly see
that old conductor looking down
and he tipped his hat to me
when in a wink, he vanished
in a trail of shiny steam
i rubbed my eyes and realized
that this was not a dream
[chorus 5]
i made it whistle
yes, i’m an engineer
give it a listen
and tell me what you hear
