[sample: unknown]
“released in 1915, d.w. griffith’s a birth of a nation is one of the most important films in cinema history, and it’s considered to the be birth of that american film industry. it’s hard to overstate the impact that this film had both on the medium of film itself and on culture as a whole. the film was responsible for some major leaps in film technology, including the first scene shot at night by use of phosphorus lamp, along with new developments in editing technique and camera movement. but culturally, however, the film carries somewhat of a darker legacy. even in 1915, the film was met with controversy. showings of the film were protested by the newly+formed national association for the advancement of colored people for its portrayal of black people. executive secretary of the naacp, mary childs nerney, wrote, ‘the harm that it is doing to colored people cannot be estimated. i hear echoes of it wherever i go and have no doubt that this was in the mind of the people who are producing it.’ the film’s portrayal of black people was so terrible, it was still being used as a recruitment tool for the ku klux klan as late as the 1970s.”

[hook: curt kennedy]
it is real but it’s not real
you can’t touch it but you can feel
ephesian 5, let’s expose it
it is wrong and we know it
why you act like it’s no big deal
it is real but it’s not real
you can’t touch it but you can feel
ephesian 5, let’s expose it
it is wrong and we know it
why you act like it’s no big deal

[verse 1: curt kennedy]
started from the bottom now we here
on top of the bottom, i guess you want some souvenirs
i ain’t one to be flowery, i reject your boutineer
yeah i know you got heart but i want what’s in between your ears
i wonder if you have enjoyed the show
all the footage you’ve gotten started a hundred years ago
and it’s shaped your perception but i don’t think you really know
’cause you think that it’s truth but it’s lying right there in control
birth of a nation in 1915, it’s a masterpiece of their creation
ain’t this a racist ill+stration, a prophecy in the making
that led to some lynchings happening in macon
portraying black men as hunting white women just to rape them
and the actors weren’t even black, you said white faces, let’s paint them
an aggressive attack that made the black man the villain
thought the film it was silent, it spoke loud to our nation’s feelings
and that by the millions
[hook: curt kennedy]
it is real but it’s not real
you can’t touch it but you can feel
ephesian 5, let’s expose it
it is wrong and we know it
why you act like it’s no big deal
it is real but it’s not real
you can’t touch it but you can feel
ephesian 5, let’s expose it
it is wrong and we know it
why you act like it’s no big deal

[verse 2: curt kennedy]
if a picture paints a thousand words
how many words, then, would you say make up a thousand pictures
media on every level they been out to get us
manipulation of the masses, they just playing wit us
exactly, you playing us on all your minstrel shows
hey bossing, cartoons, where we ain’t look composed
ignorant slaves where all we do is sing and joke
hold up, this is america video, it shows
not much has changed, media highlighting
all the sins of black people over time
convinced the nation we the main ones that’s into crime
news story, news story, news story, black people handcuffed
war on drugs, silver screen, pimps, prostitutes, and thugs
angry, mean, lazy, crazies, what you’ve seen
unless we make you laugh, can run or dribble fast or can sing
so either we’ll entertain you or try to k!ll you
that’s what the media showed you and that’s the real you
(’cause we believe it too)
[hook: curt kennedy]
it is real but it’s not real
you can’t touch it but you can feel
ephesian 5, let’s expose it
it is wrong and we know it
why you act like it’s no big deal
it is real but it’s not real
you can’t touch it but you can feel
ephesian 5, let’s expose it
it is wrong and we know it
why you act like it’s no big deal

[verse 3: curt kennedy]
all you gotta do is just google this stuff
and you will see that this ain’t me really doing too much
i can’t capture all the media bias that makes our sin be the highest
and our intelligence lower, that got me wondering, why us?
it’s funny we’ve been victimized but are playing the victim
if i talk about media and its racist dictums
and the influence they’ve had on millions and millions
all the images trusted, like they are just neutral in dealings
but they’re not though, it’s been hostile
from racist cartoons to criminals on your news show
hashtag oscars so white, inconsequential to some whites
was us just saying we’ve had enough of this stuff joe
we downplay the influence of media on how we think
what we see, what we believe, what we dismiss, it’s hit or miss
and even the church can be remiss
and some will probably just be angry at this
and try to diss, uh
[hook: curt kennedy]
it is real but it’s not real
you can’t touch it but you can feel
ephesian 5, let’s expose it
it is wrong and we know it
why you act like it’s no big deal
it is real but it’s not real
you can’t touch it but you can feel
ephesian 5, let’s expose it
it is wrong and we know it
why you act like it’s no big deal

“when so many in the media are reporting the same stories, promulgating the same narratives, relying on the same sources, even using the same phrases ++ i mean, think of it. there are literally thousands of legitimate news stories that could be reported in a given day and an infinite number of ways to report them. when everybody’s on the same page, it might be the result of an organized campaign.”
