act i
on that day at the end of fall, they chalked one up for the good guys
the plunger sank straight down to the needle and the crowd whistled and hollered
and mr. hound knew he couldn’t lie to himself
he knew she wasn’t the k!ller
the witnesses knew they couldn’t lie to themselves +
they knew they k!lled her

but if she could hear, what would they have said?
oh, if she could speak, would she have forgiven them?
what if she could hear… what would they say?
if she could speak, would she have forgiven them?

act ii
on that day at the end of spring
the newspaper boys screamed bl++dy murder
and shoved headlines into pedestrian’s faces
calling for her head
and she looked confused as they broke down her door
and pushed her face into the carpet
mouthing words she couldn’t hear if she wanted
“ms. lamb, you’re under arrest!
ms. lamb, we’re here for your head!”
it was all just silence
just the sound of the ocean
as she watched her house disappear
it was all just silence, just the sound of a murder
because it’s all the same to her
act iii
on that day at the end of summer
a subtle persuasion began to unfold
something wicked bid the witnesses to meet some bad luck until the fear of god took hold
one morning a witness woke to find his son’s bed empty and cold
another was driving home when three white vans drove her off of the road
old mr. hound got off easy with a matching set of broken bones
and every single one got the same cursed note on their bedpost:
“what you saw was a ghost. remember that for your own good. sincerely, mr. wolf.”
and they each thought back to the same day that the ghost ruined their lives

act iv
on that day at the end of winter, justice deer arrived to cast his vote
on a class+action suit against big bad wolf inc. when justice deer caught a knife in his throat
and he stumbled and bled as the witnesses fled
but ms. lamb held his head, though nothing could be said
he looked up at her grace, and then saw his face…
his face! his face! and mr. wolf walked calmly away
oh what a day, ms. lamb, oh what a day
and the flood of white vans with big bad wolf inc. on the side
justice deer’s final words flaccid to her silenced mind
but she didn’t need to hear to know the sirens never came
oh justice deer, this ain’t your day…
oh witnesses, this ain’t your day
oh poor ms. lamb, it seems like this just ain’t your day
act v
on that day at the end of fall, the witnesses couldn’t meet her sad stare
they just cleared their throats, mr. hound led the choir, and they sang sweet with a lifetime of rehearsal
and they sang… “it was her! she k!lled him!”
and in the back of the courtroom, mr. wolf drooled in approval
he simply shook their hands, patted their backs, and raved
“i’ve never seen such a performance!”
and secretly, the witnesses were envious of ms. lamb’s fate
“no, she’s not the one who has to live with what she did
no, she’s not the one who has to live with this ghost.”
