in the next 500 days
so eventually we came
to an agreement
he would hire me as
chef in charge of pies
i’d sneak ingredients
into the back and hide
away from prying eyes
he’d rebrand, advertise
and gain exclusive rights
to my world-famous pizzas
and the opening night
there was a band to hype
a food critic type
who got the first invite
he got the first slice
he took the first bite
he spits it out
and the band ignites
of course the critic
gave the restaurant lowest rank
and in every follow-up
interview i gave
i admit that to this day
i still have yet to taste
i’ve never had pizza
there was an accident
when i was only five
it left my tastebuds
permanently fried
so i focused on my eyes
and later i’d decide
to photograph what people like
and people like pizza
and people like pizza

from deep inside
