frank watkinson - lessons and impressions. lyrics
[verse 1]
time is flying by, i only have to close my eyes and another week is gone
body starts aching and there’s no escaping the fact that i’m getting on
i go out walking and i do a lot of talking to anyone and everyone i meet
and is this my way of unloading the life’s secrets that i keep?
[verse 2]
and in my local cafe, there’s a young boy playing pinball
and he’s a quarter of my age, shouting abuse at the silver ball
his eyes, they glare with rage
don’t think about it anymore, because i’ve seen it all before
nothing new herе to see, so i sit at the table in the cornеr
and i sip at my hot cup of tea
[verse 3]
and i hang my head and stare at the floor
listening to the clatter behind the kitchen door
and it sounds like the dishwasher is getting what for
it doesn’t seem to be their day
[verse 4]
a loud shout out from the boy on the pinball makes everyone turn their heads
the tilt light is flashing all over the screen and he’s upset now
the game is dead
he picks up his backpack and he fumbles for coins
and discovers he has no more
there’s a look of disappointment on his face
as he heads towards the door
[verse 4]
and the more i think about it, the more i can see
that a hundred years ago that boy was me
a lesson learned, nothing is free and being angry just makes it worse
[verse 5]
on the pavement outside is a sprinkling of snow
and that cold east wind is starting to blow
so i guess it’s time for me to go home for a little heat
and making my way to the edge of town
the sprinkling of snow is being swirled around
making it harder because it’s so slippery on the feet
[verse 6]
well there was a time, a long time ago
my eyes would light up when i saw snow
a pure white blanket crisp and cold
made the whole world look so clean
[verse 7]
and up at the bus stop, outside of the mall
a woman stumbles in front of them all
helplessly i watch, as she slips on the path and sadly begins to fall
but from inside the queue, two strong arms make it through
and catch her with no damage done at all
and everyone breathes a sigh of relief
and then they praise the young hero
[verse 8]
but who was this knight in shining armour with reactions so sharp and keen?
to my surprise without the angry eyes
it was the boy from the pinball machine
[outro]
well there you go, just goes to show, no matter what you may think
you just don’t know, first impressions don’t always give it away
another lesson i learned today
