g-ace - my head interview #1: jade lyrics
how do you write? what’s your method?
usually i’ll listen to the beat for a little bit, sort of get a feel for what i think the song should be about. i also then come up with the flow of the song, like if it starts with a hook, or a verse, for example. while producing, i will make spots for a verse, hook, bridge, whatever. oftentimes i will stick to that, but there are a few examples where i
will change it. the intro to dark days was going to be extended, and a few songs on my album have changed in terms of formatting as well
you said dark days is your favorite song on the ep. why is that?
it is almost all in the instrumental. i can’t quite describe it, but there is something that i just love about dark and sort of high-pitched beats. the original inspiration for this beat was the beat for moment of clarity by jay-z. in the hook for that song, the background instruments do a similar thing. obviously there are different notes and different instruments, but the idea is there. also, the song talks about three things that i wanted to talk about for a while but didn’t get around to it. each thing is represented in one of the verses. verse one is about school, verse two is about how i can admittedly be an -ssh0l- at terms and verse three is about my family’s financial status
what is the most difficult thing about making this ep? and the easiest?
both are in coming up with ideas. it can, at times, be really easy and really hard. when i was going to make an ep, i knew i wanted it to be a little more dark than my album, which is more light-hearted. which is why i think each track talks about its own thing, with dark days being the overall theme
you talk about your mother in stressed. is the relationship very bad?
i didn’t think much of that line when i said it (that verse was a freestyle). once i listened back to the song, i realized that the line sounded more negative than i intended. i don’t have a bad relationship with my mother (i think it’s a pretty average relationship) but the constant talking about grades and sh-t, especially when good grades are completely ignored by bad grades, it can get annoying and this song was my breaking point
what do you wish you could have had in the making of the ep that you didn’t?
i wish i had a better microphone to record with
what was the thing that you had the most fun doing in the process of making the ep?
probably writing. i love writing. it’s very rare that everything i write for a song will end up being a part of the song. one man show had about 16 bars cut from it. it was about something (that i touch on my album, so i don’t want to get into that right now) but it could’ve been interpreted wrong. most of the songs on this ep actually did end up having everything i wrote for it, but most others haven’t. the darker the beat, the more i keep, i’ve noticed
why “my head”?
it’s quite simple. every track on the ep (except the tracks focused more on sk!ll) are about stuff i think about a lot. it was only a matter of time before i wrote about it. the original name for this ep was dark days, named after the song. but my head just seemed like a better t-tle
do you think there were any major influences for this ep? which ones?
eminem’s production, especially from 2003-2006. not only is that my favorite production era from him, but oftentimes when making a beat i will have a beat already stuck in my head, and bits and pieces of that beat will end up in the final version. take respect for example. if you listen to that beat, and then the beat for the 50 cent song back down, you may notice a bit of a similarity in the piano pattern. i don’t try to imitate beats, it often just sort of sneaks in there
what do you think of yourself as a music creator?
i think that this is a good start, but i definitely have room to improve. i do think that improving on my production, writing and overall sk!lls that my music can be better. a better mic would definitely help
is there anything you feel like saying to the public before releasing the ep?
hopefully y’all like it and don’t bully me too bad about it
