ghizela rowe - william whitehead - an introduction lyrics
william whitehead was born in 1715. he entered clare college, cambridge and became a fellow in 1742. at cambridge, whitehead published an epistle on the danger of writing verse and other poems, notably “anne boleyn to henry viii” and a didactic essay on ridicule. after thomas gray declined the laureateship in 1757, george ii offered it to whitehead, who was a more acceptable choice at court
after being appointed, whitehead defended the poetry of laureates in a comic poem, “a pathetic apology for all laureates, past, present, and to come.” he was conscientious and saw himself as a nonpartisan representative of the whole country. incredibly for a political appointee, he appeared to feel no obligation to defend the king or support the government. for his 28 years in the post, he contented himself with writing the obligatory verse and bolstering britain’s place in world affairs. indeed, he was the first laureate to see past court and party divisions and speak of the spirit of england. he died on the 14th of april 1785
