mainstream ’09 lyrics
[verse 1]
well i’m in full appreciation of creation on many levels
i’ll listen to anything down from classical to heavy metal
blues and jazz, i could listen to that
but the one thing i can’t stand is mainstream rap
it goes one for the money ‘cause that’s all they really care about
two is for the same played style that you’re wearing out
on mtv i see the same old thing like every day
a bunch of rappers jumping around, claiming they gettin’ paid
okay, you’ve got money and women, we’ve established that
why don’t you take a different subject for your next track?
something original, i know it’s hard these days, to rephrase your cliches
but that copycatting sh+t is wack
this lollipopping, candy+shopping hip hop, it’s popping
ignorant motherf+ckers be like, “yo, this sh+t is hot”
mean even i’ll admit the beat was kinda catchy
but your lyrics are sketchy, that’s ‘cause you copied ‘em from another emcee
don’t get me started
these rappers are shameless, tryna look and sound the same as other rappers who are famous
thinking a gold chain is somehow gonna get you props
all the sh+t you talk, pretend you’re a thug ‘cause you bit 2pac, let’s get it straight
this ain’t a f+cking fashion show, they’re flashing dough in videos
‘cause kids don’t know it’s fake just like your sh+tty flows
they wanna grow up to be like you and then they continue the trend of being fake and pretend, it’s all sh—
[verse 2]
now the record executives never give the underground a chance
thinking records won’t sell unless you get the crowd to dance
meanwhile emcees are out here tryna make the sound advance
spitting loud at fans, making them proud to put up their hands
and still don’t get no recognition from the radio
the stations scared to play it, afraid the people will hate it
so they put the same songs on repeat and claim to be the best in hip+hop and r&b
i find it hard to believe
‘cause nowadays it seems hip+hop has lost its heart and soul
some had integrity but traded it for cars and gold
“you’re gonna be famous,” that’s what the record labels tell ‘em
but they’ll abandon you the moment that your record stops selling
it’s all just politics and greed within the industry
that’s why the underground heads work independently
writing with complexity but doing shows for next to free, under the radar yet shining far past expectancy
so who’s the next emcee out here tryna get some?
just think ‘fore you try to make this your profession
headed the wrong way, rapping about your possessions
it takes more than a paycheck to earn my respect, son
and still, they’re using b+tches, money and weed to blatantly conform
this sh+t is funny indeed
what do you need these days to be a famous rapper?
apparently not sk!lls ‘cause the majority of y’all don’t have ‘em
so back up, take a look at your situation
decide whether you’re doing this for money or innovation
the scene’s already become overrun with imitation so
take it slow, be creative with your flow or hit the road
time to go back to the roots from where you began
to all the truer heads, it’s time to take a stand
by writing what you believe, not what the people perceive hip+hop to be
we already know where that leads
and i’m not even feeling it, to be perfectly honest
so to all you record execs, i’m making you a promise
next time you think you can’t sell hip+hop that’s conscious
play this on the radio, i guarantee you’ll get responses
