j keys - occupy music lyrics

yeah. uh
this goes to all my people occupying wall street across the world

yeah. c’mon
i need a dollar
it makes me want to holler
can’t get in the club, ’cause they say i need a collar
can’t get in the country club; they say i rock a blue one
say i need a white collar
my pops was in the union
son of a working man
i don’t have no benefits
screaming “f+ck the system and everything it represents!”
i punched the clock so much, it makes me want to punch the clock
like literally, beat the screen, make the hands of timе stop

the field is made of concrеte; we still sharecroppin’
the spirituals i sing are overtop of beat boxing
i was beating box in a cell, left to rot
they say we free, but i’m nervous on my block
i don’t have a weapon, and i haven’t done a crime, but i still got this fear i’m at risk of doing time

still get uptight when the cops circle around
“protect and serve” still got a funny sound
troy davis’s blood still stains the ground
this is the climbing of the urban environment
trying to make it through the day; haven’t thought about retirement
a lot of good people work theyself into a grave
my american dreams? i’m an american slave!

this nation was build so that we never have power
they got bullets for anyone that don’t respect the dollar
bullets for anyone that don’t respect the dollar!
this nation was built so that we never have power (power, power, power, power)

[male reporter]
occupy wall street is a grassroots movement that seems to be gaining momentum across the country. demonstrators are protesting what they call “corporate greed” and “social inequality.” protests like this are going on in a number of cities, including ours. taka?

[female reporter]
that’s right. i want to show you here at west lake them occupying. you see the “we are the 99%” signs. this is the core of their message. they are referring to the banks, insurance, and mortgage industries as the 1% of society. protesters say that 1% has more influence on how this country is run, and the 99% will no longer be silenced. (background, faint chanting: “we! are! the 99 percent!”) and as you can hear, that chanting continues tonight, and we understand this protest may even continue overnight. now, in new york, about 400 protesters were arrested on the brooklyn bridge

[man]
this a unique moment in time. this is not going to go away. these people are fed up. we’ve had enough. let’s see some change
