jared paul - red sweatshirt lyrics
it’s strange how you could be so close
to someone for a time and then separate
it’s almost like a past life
i ain’t seen her in years she got a baby now
we almost had a baby once
but we lived too far apart and anyway
i wasn’t in love, though i wish that i was
i wonder who the kid woulda looked like
black hair and blue eyes, i bet
i bet, i bet they woulda been beautiful
and that works for what’s poetic n’ musical
but don’t justify creation of a human being
one hundred percent in love is the only reason
so we don’t share a life or a kid just a sweatshirt
hanging in my closet, crumpled on the floor
sometimes i forget that it’s even yours
hand written letters that went unanswered
read backwards in the mirror
how come i never answered?
i knew it wouldn’t work but there’s always time
to dream in your exlovers red sweatshirt
i don’t even know why i keep it
maybe ‘cause it’s comfortable
because it fits me right…
because it makes me think of special times in my life
reminds me of you and how you loved me right
how we went to jail together, made love
posted bail, and beat our case together
hand written letters you sent that went unanswered
read backwards in the mirror, how come i never answered?
i knew it wouldn’t work, but there’s always time
to dream in your ex lovers red sweatshirt
hanging in my closet or crumpled on the floor
sometimes i forget that it’s even yours
rips in the armpit, big hole in the sleeve
been washed so many times, that it don’t even bleed
hasn’t smelled like you for years
but if i close my eyes…
i see twin cities, riot police, austin
court rooms, providence, new orleans
we met at a poetry fest and made plans
i backed out because it felt too much like a date
made it clear i was not single; but you didn’t care
came knocking at my room just the same
i didn’t let you in but your boldness was impressive
the following spring my relationship had ended
came through minneapolis on tour
and you didn’t even blink when you saw
that it was slug who dropped me off at the door
you knew who he was, but weren’t starstruck
just said h-llo then looked at me until the door shut
dinner led to tea led to talking on the couch
electrifying words but i was focused on your mouth
d-mn, books led to poems, led to stories
hands led to arms, led to us making out
the next year was a blur of buses n’ planes
protests, politics, and long distance rain
laughing at the d.a., holding hands in the court
trying to make the best of time that was short
between the case, your tour schedule and mine
saw you more fam’ and friends here in rhode isle
romantically speaking, it was a respectable effort
but how time catches up
with tiny tea cups trembling in a tempest
the girl i got now the best i’ve ever had
i can’t believe i’m even writing this
i’m must be crazy
there’s just no way to explain
what reminiscing over music does
we may be through with past
but it ain’t through with us
