jingo - ghost in the machine lyrics
hot off the back of their latest release, a.d.d, jingo are ready for round two with ghost in the machine, the next track to be lifted from their upcoming ep (25th september). a.d.d. delivered the lust, p-ssion and unbridled enthusiasm that the band are quickly becoming renowned for. recorded at the renowned soup studios (daughter, johnny flynn, the k!lls, the maccabees, roots manuva) and mastered by kevin blackler (johnny cash, red hot chilli peppers, the strokes, the raconteurs, prodigy), has gained support from the likes of clash, bbc london’s gary crowley, artrocker, hypetrak +
jack buckett and joe reeves met katie (now) buckett in brooklyn, new york, before luring her back to the bright lights of east london. on returning to the big smoke, guitars in hand; jingo, along with the new addition to the rhythm section, chris smith, have found themselves drawing influence from brns, not blood paint, interpol, wolf alice, jeff buckley and prince to create their vivacious, driving sounds. in 2013 the band won the “made in shoreditch” competition that entitled them to two days recording time at the infamous strongroom studios (arctic monkeys, depeche mode, radiohead, british sea power, primal scream) – the end result of which was “when you want me: a single doused in originality that begs to be heard
jingo’s debut alb-m the art of loving received recognition from acclaimed uk tastemakers and gave them the material they needed to head out on a successful us tour alongside friends not blood paint. the past few months have seen them back on the road; this time covering germany and western europe. jingo’s last show overseas (rouen, france) saw them supporting ken stringfellow (r.e.m and the posies) and troy von balthazar (american 90s cult group chokebore) with a tour of belgium still to come. back on home soil, the band have played a sold out show old st pancras church for a.d.d. single launch with hannah schneider, mother london supporting graham c-xon and denai moore and the great escape festival
mixed and produced by new york based producer kahan james, ghost in the machine is something close to anthemic. as has become custom with jingo tracks, katie’s powerful, entirely unflappable and very bat for lashes vocals have you hanging on every beautifully crafted word. groaning reverb pours out into guitar so lifting it could be calypso whilst amplified rawness and artful melodies scream warpaint with a portishead shade
the accompanying video to ghost in the machine shows incredible, short film worthy visuals and camera sk!lls. jingo’s drummer joe undergoes a transformation from unremarkable city worker into an animalistic doppelganger of himself after an encounter with a dumpster-dwelling shaman. he’s trained to do away with materialism and to get back to his primitive roots but can the new joe return to the city with his old life and his sanity intact? nature is as dangerous as it is nurturing, just as some ideologies, seemingly in line with our morals, can lose their meaning when put in a modern context. this is jack hextall’s third music video in collaboration with jingo and he’s also the robot-handed subject in their single artwork. ghost in the machine is about the science and logic of today pointing to the notion that biology, whether of the individual or society as a whole works and behaves like the cogs of a machine, but is there some invisible force, some “soul” that drives us, something eternal and undetectable that makes us more than the sum of parts
jingo are taking musical leaps with every release, every one of which deservedly draws attention to the kind of band they have become: serious musicians brimming with promise
