joe glazer - rea song lyrics
[intro]
“i wanna do one more song from the roosevelt period. part of the new deal alphabet i mentioned before was the rea, rural electrification administration. now, that doesn’t mean much to city folk, but to farm families, it was an absolute revolution. in 1935, when the rea was started, only fifteen percent—get this, fifteen percent of farms in this nation had electricity. and by the time the rural electrification got through with their farmers’ co+ops, in twenty years, ninety+five percent—ninety+five percent of the farms had electricity. now, a minnesota farm housewife of swedish descent, she wrote this song to tell the story of what the rea revolution meant to housewives and farmers, and she called this song, ‘one happy swede’.”
[verse 1]
i been a farmer in minnesota
been here mostly all my life
got myself some fancy contraptions
mostly to please my purty wife
[verse 2]
well, the rea, she sure been helpful
made our job here one big fun
all we do is press the b+ttons
then our job, by gosh, is done
[verse 3]
i got some milkers, sure are tricky
to my cows i put them on
turn around and pet the calves
and then, by gol, my milkin’s done
[verse 4]
and now that woman doesn’t nag me
for the water to go and get
all she does is turn the faucet
and the whole durned place gets wet
[verse 5]
and now this rea is something
with it, you just can’t go wrong
and i tell you, and i mean it
this ole swede helped things along
