jon crosby - lullaby lyrics

Loading...

[spoken to live audience:] this song is written by a guy named barry sadler. he was a staff sergeant in the army during the vietnam war. he recorded this song in 1966, it was on an album that was a big country record in the sixties called the battle of the green berets. it’s kinda weird, i couldn’t imagine a record label, like, signing a soldier now, it’s a little different. but uh, i found it on vinyl. he actually died from a gunshot wound he received in south america in 1989. there’s a lot of mysterious circumstances around that. apparently they don’t really know exactly what happened, whether it was suicide or homicide or what

[chorus]
go to sleep, it’s getting late
my watch says it’s half past eight
in an hour i must go
when i’ll be back, well i don’t know

[verse]
while i’m gone, you’ll be a man
help your mama when you can
it’s a big job, i can see
for a boy just pushing three
son, can i have a little kiss
just a small one you won’t miss
that’s right, close your sleepy eyes
you shouldn’t see your daddy cry

[chorus]
so go to sleep, it’s getting late
my watch says it’s half past eight
in an hour i must go
when i’ll be back, well i don’t know
