joshua morata - street poetry lyrics
[verse 1]
with the darkness closing in
you turn around and he’s there again
his pale face carrying a grin, he makes another offer to sin
points a gun to a liquor store
you got enough but you needed more
another blue collar off to jail, another poor soul up for sale
sometimes it ain’t easy to feed a family of four
but you got to make the most of it before you hear the sirens uproar. and i know it’s all in fear, and you do it just for the money. how long do you think it’ll last? where it comes to haunt you, memory’s past
[bridge]
hiding away in the city shadows
watching all the people hang like gallows
liquor stores, neon signs, can’t you tell it’s the sign of the times?
do you know what you’re in for?
when they take it all away, and you’ll have are cloudy days
but that’s alright, because i know you
better than you know yourself
better than anything you ever knew at all
[verse 2]
all through downtown, people
don’t care if you don’t make a sound
they just walk their way through the garden of concrete
and a cop rolls by, you roll up your window in case you are high
he sees the smoke, you know you’re done
you buckle your seatbelt and there you go, a man on the run
playing cops and robbers ain’t cool if you know what you’re in for
god is watching over you, but day by day you choose the devil’s door
(no no, no no)
well what do you want? how do you feel?
are you proud of yourself for letting in the demons that will forever set in…
it’s getting cold outside, the sunset is coming
the darkness will close you in
[verse 3: the poem]
as the streets go silent and the lights turn bright
will they still find you dead asleep as you were last night?
i am nothing but a street poet
reading your thoughts as i judge your walk
never doubt me, i walk among you with the eyes of a dead prophet
i am not ashamed to hurt you with the truth
nor am i ashamed to heal you with a lie
you carry a burden i give to you
something to keep and remember me by
take no more trust, from the peers who deceive and demand l-st. temptation is a ransom that begs for your attention
trust no other but yourself
and others that can promise your future
i walk the streets of which society has created
dead gr-ss and large trees that once helped breed a nation
sunrise to sunset, rinse and repeat
count the blessings of your loved ones that quietly weep
for salvation, jubilation, and for you to return home
that word is the key, and the key that we need is home
let you rest well for tonight
as the father above us holds to tomorrow for all of us
a silent bird or a weary dying man
a street poet with the faith in god and in himself writes for a better tomorrow
