justin bergen - what is the gospel? lyrics
verse 1: terminology
what is the gospel?
everybody’s got an opinion
open up your ears and let the spirit do the speakin’
there so many misconceptions
when you ask this question
what is the gospel?
i’ve found it’s not just something you can ask siri
she says it’s four books, or just a theory
she say it’s just a genre, an
iconic song
complementary sounds all along
mere onomatopoeia
and that’s a nice idea
but let’s not speculate or leave to debate what god clearly intended to communicate
in his scripture there’s a clear picture
what is the gospel?
let’s start with the heart of the matter
the word itself means good news
a message, a story
and the author is god, with the goal of his glory
if we just keep swimming we’ll find dory
verse 2: creation
what is the gospel?
according to god, what did he write?
a bright light on a midsummer’s night?
he shakes spears with his power and might
he created great things to reflect his great godliness
to him it was obvious
the universe was made for god’s fame
in the beginning….there was no sinning
his triunion with himself was enough
no tough love in heaven above
just father, spirit, son
still three, still one
it’s beyond my comprehension
their love had no tension or apprehension
but as you know, true love overflows
and god wanted someone else to share with him
suddenly adam and eve were there with
him
his greatness made public
somebody else to love it
in perfect paradise no pair of dice could win you
with god himself beside, above, and in you
verse 3: fall
what is the gospel?
it’s love, and love requires choice
so with the word as the voice
he said “the garden or the desert?
will you desert me?
will you rebel and hurt me?”
and after all he did for us we spat at him
yeah, we, you and me, not just bad eve and bad adam
instantly, our insta story went offline
there’s something wrong with our plot line
we didn’t heed the stop sign
and started to sin
along with the rest of humanity
you’ve embraced your total depravity
you’ve fallen from god’s laws like you broke the law of gravity
lying, stealing, blasphemy, l-st
if god is just, you must be crushed
he hates murder so he’ll send murderers to h-ll
but he’s so perfect he hates lying as well
he sees your thoughts, and how they’re not true to him
the l-st, hate, pride, it’s not new to him
so my friend! you stand condemned!
god is perfect, he requires perfection
you’ve seen that you’re fallen from god’s perception
which brings us back to our first question
verse 4: redemption
what is the gospel? redemption
you’re a rogue, one rebel with a new hope yet
a redeemer is one who pays off your debt
it might sound crazy, but god became a baby
he stepped into a womb and
was born of a woman
growing up, he knew his place in our race
perfectly completing every standard, every rule
he was the top student in school-
and his straight a grades
can be paid to you
because where we failed math cl-ss he didn’t
he one a righteous life
he went two the cross
nailed to a three he counted everything loss
died four our sin
he bought us five letters
add it up
grace- g r a c e
you can’t earn it, you don’t deserve it, grace stands for
god’s riches at christ’s expense
this exchange rate doesn’t make any cents!
holy god gets my sin, i get his righteousness
verse 5: resurrection
that’s the gospel!
but as i impose prose i can’t neglect to mention
how christ rose again, the reality of
his resurrection
if christ is not risen
your sin is not forgiven
and jesus? well he’s just a dead man
the great “i was” not the great “i am.”
he is life! and since death has been drowned
the immersed living water came up out of the ground
and just like water he’ll flow through
you’ll know him like he knows you
he’ll live through your broken and beaten old head
long live the new king, the old you is
dead!
and you’ll be made like jesus instead!
verse 6: salvation
what people don’t understand about the gospel is this:
it demands that you choose
today is the day, there is no time to lose
the clock ticks
the gun clicks, da ting goes skraw
this man’s not hot cause he’s dead in the jaw
christ left you a gift under the tree
it’s called eternity
and you can’t have a gift unless you receive it
so unwrap his presence, your present, don’t leave it!
too many people have died in the last five seconds
for you to ignore god’s command of faith and repentance
say to him now, with your mouth and your heart
i repent and believe, jesus, i’m ready to start
and he’ll come and he’ll save you and change you and win you
once more before by beside you and in you
verse 7: application
that’s the gospel!
so what will you say?
when they ask you “sir, what must i do to be saved?”
like that jailer in acts who asked for facts
will you turn him away?
or will you preach the gospel of peace to the priests and the people
to all creatures, whether under a shack or a steeple!
like cold water to a weary soul
so is good news from a distant land
when will we understand
that the crucible is crucial!
that believing is beautiful!
that christ commands our hands to move and prove that he is suitable!
he said “go and unashamedly proclaim my name to all the nations!
this the power of god to salvation!
to be preached to all creation!
he’s patient, not wishing that any should perish
go to vancouver, and tokyo, and moscow and paris
worldwide there’s a call to all persons
to trusting in christ for your life and your purpose
all ages, you elders, there’s still breath to speak!
of god’s righteous workings and shepherding sheep!
you middle aged parents. you burnt out youth pastors!
christ’s power is alive and he works in disaster!
you seventeens, eighteens, and nineteens like me!
don’t wait til you’re old with a college degree!
your life could end today!
and you’d be saved but likely still enslaved to the lie that you need to be an apostle to preach the gospel!
that you need to be strong for god to use you
that’s so wrong, it’s when you’re weak that he’ll choose you!
so let him move you!
we must trust god! with man it’s impossible
so with that in mind ask yourself, what is the gospel?
