l0ne w0lf - when a hero dies (spoken word) lyrics

Loading...

grandpa taught me more than a little bit
i learned that life is like a toddler and sometimes it’ll hit
he taught me to hit back and he taught me about grit
and he gave me a coin so that i’d never quit
he taught me not to take
anything for granted
i think about the seeds he planted
i learned a knuckle sandwich
don’t fit in a lunch sack
how do you fight
something that won’t punch back
seeing him battle a disease he couldn’t see was like
watching a blind man see in the night
he was lost
what does somebody who’s seen success their whole life
do when they can’t take care of themselves for more than 4 nights?
grandpa was a hero but he wasn’t immortal
yet that twinkle in his eyes would send me through a portal
to a different place at a different time
him telling stories was purely divine
now i wish i could take all the pain he ever felt and make it mine
and i know i’m not the only one who would wait in that line
you see, he was more than a man
he was the type of person they make movies about
he showed me that you can achieve anything if you believe in yourself
and don’t move, and don’t doubt
stick your ground until your laid down in it
that’s what i saw him do until his life was finished
but the work he did while he walked this earth
will live on forever
he touched peoples lives he’d never met and would never see again
now that’s bringing the world together
i aim to be like him in so many ways
you could call me a clone
but i couldn’t have done it by myself
as much as i like being alone
the blessing of growing up with him in my life is something i can’t put words to
learning how to work, how to have fun, how to laugh, how to cry
what it’s like to feel joy, and how scary it is when grandpa is mad + or even worse, disappointed
you see
when a hero dies
heaven gains a soldier
there’s no need to carry the weight
on your chest of that boulder
they’ll be watching over you
as you continue to grow older
and they’ll be holding on to you
when you don’t have another shoulder
cause when a hero dies
the whole world sheds a tear
when a hero dies
their memory is kept near
and all they’ve done
the battles they’ve won
nothing will overshadow
the good that has come

with every fall we lost more and more of him
tryna remember the good times, keep the memories pourin in
he could always find the calm in a life that’s been storming
i hope grandpa gets to see the great man he began forming
i knew eventually that this day would come
but that don’t make it any easier feeling this numb
when i heard the news my heart was beating like a drum
then it stopped
and started breaking into crumbs
people say i have a way with words
but nothing that i say will change the way this hurts
i lost the man i looked up to
grandpa was my idol
knowing that he’s gone
hit me like a wave that’s tidal
but there’s solace in knowing
the pain he felt is gone
it’s amazing that a man that old
was really that strong
he brought us joy
laughs and tears
inspired dreams
and chased down fears
i now know what it’s like
to have everyone look up to you
cause the man that i would turn too
had a hundred other eyes on him too
now i could never measure up
and i don’t think i’ll try to
but i know he raised a son
and i’m trying to follow in that man’s shoes
grandpa started all of us
on a path to a better life
when i was surrounded by bitter darkness
grandpa was my light
cause
when a hero dies
heaven gains a soldier
there’s no need to carry the weight
on your chest of that boulder
they’ll be watching over you
as you continue to grow older
and they’ll be holding on to you
when you don’t have another shoulder
cause when a hero dies
the whole world sheds a tear
when a hero dies
their memory is kept near
and all they’ve done
the battles they’ve won
nothing will overshadow
the good that has come

and i need you to know
you’ll live on in my memory
the young strong hard+working boy
is how i want you to remember me
i love you gramps
