lil-ezvert - best of the west: the choys lyrics

Loading...

intro [ethan]
okay let’s take a step back
we’ll compare and contrast
the attributes and characters
of wayson and his dad

hook [lilly]
they both lived in canada
in our local vancouver
but since wayson was born here
and not in homeland china
he developed his own culture
and let his father down

in chinatown

since they grew in different times
their bond is sometimes rocky
just like our mountains, they were
shaped by time p-ssing

their viewpoints always clashed
take a look at their work ethics
one was always working away
while the other stayed out of the way

so come on our journey
venture into the shadows
don’t let the differences between
wayson and toy remain unseen!

verse 1 (father) [lilly]
first came the dad, his name is toy
’18 was the year that he lost his voice
came to gold mountain ‘cause he had no other choice, spent his
time as a houseboy just to earn some bread and stay employed

scrub the floors, buy the groceries, get more salve and don’t talk back
cook the dinner, wash the dishes, the choice to stop is what he lacked
he scrubs ‘em he buys ‘em, he cooks it all for ‘em
night and day, he has no say, but he never complains because

that’s the type of man he is, constantly working hard
builds up walls to hide his past, he never lets down his guard
a reclusive man, shrouded in a veil of mystery
“don’t ask me about it” he would often plea

see if you follow his paper trail, he’s unidentifiable
keeping his past in the shadows, it’s hard to find a timetable
but in his mind, you can find what all these papers tried to hide
a man full of pride, head held high, even when life went awry

knowledgeable of the west, but he never lost his heritage
respecting new culture, while maintaining what he brought
although a parent is a child’s first and most important teacher
when it came to young wayson, some things just couldn’t be taught

the voracious appet-te aboard his cpr ship took a toll
upon his soul, and sometimes rising anger took control
of his actions, which wayson feared as if supernatural
this fear, was it justified or irrational?

father’s anger was like a ghost, in the heart of wayson’s mind
one that haunted him for years, but he grew stronger over time
whether due to this fear, or to chronic absences
father choy didn’t always receive the love that mama did

but thankfully, overtime, their bond intensified
it now exemplifies the qualities to keep in mind
when examining the relationship between father and son
although they both trouble each other, they will always be loved ones

verse 2 (sonny) [ethan]
sonny choi, or choy way sun
that’s my main man
born and raised in canada, just like me he’s a
cbc, that’s a chinese born canadian
speaking chinglish ‘round town, at chinese
school he would frown
not only is he different from his parents culturally
didn’t have to immigrate from china so he never faced
the struggles that his parents experienced on the daily
working ‘round the clock there was no time for being lazy
“it was my first taste of envy,” exclaimed wayson as a child
took for granted what he had, as a boy he was wild
under mama’s shadow sheltered wayson didn’t understand
how hard his father worked, earning income just to feed the fam
sonny never worked a day, instead he watched opera plays
chilled at home, played all day, ate some food then hit the hay
went on outings with his uncles, but it wasn’t always fun
like his third uncle, who he couldn’t overcome
he usually gets his way with a bit of greed and selfish need
didn’t care about the lessons that his father tried to teach
and eventually, toy gave up and just let wayson be

now while his father looks at the past with resent and spite
that’s the opposite of wayson, who inquired of the past
searching for the truth, behind all these paper shadows
about knowledge that was cast away which wayson tried to ask
their different outlooks on their history is only one
of quite a few discrepancies in character, which have become
evident, for instance, take a look at wayson’s work ethic
didn’t like chinese school so he gave up and skipped cl-ss
this mo-no boy, didn’t care about his family’s culture
replying ‘i’m canadian’ to those that asked
there’s no way that father toy, would’ve tossed away his heritage
this demonstrates the tenacity which wayson clearly lacked
when it came to chinese culture, his parents always gave him flak
so overtime he grew to understand his customary drawbacks

hook [lilly]

conclusion [ethan]
our exploration of the depths, in their shadows cast by paper
emphasize toy and his son, and their differences of nurture
we hope our flow was silky smooth, ‘cause we tried our very best
just like wayson choy, we proudly represent the west
