they were so in love, man they even had a baby

katie on the ground and she sitting there passed out
alex so confused, so he put her in the car
then he stepped on the gas and drove katie to the er
now he sitting there, heart beating out his chest
katie gotta stay overnight, they running more tests
and the doctor walked up
said, well i have good news, katie is awake and she really wants to speak to you
alex walked in and like katie i been missing you
then she cut him off like i’m two steps ahead of you
doctor said that i was passed out from 12+2
you get off work at 11, so where were you
alex was a cheater but he never showed no sign of it
he ain’t say nothing ’cause this just wasn’t the time for it
couple hours later doctors walk in
and the 3 of them get to talking
then the doctor looked at the clipboard real sad
katie had cancer it was really really bad
right then and there alex felt his heart die
katie looked up to the sky, started to cry
alex just kept asking why
then katie looked him right in the eyes
and said
why do we love the things that hurt us
look, why do we tend to hurt the people we love
i don’t even know the answer to that question
but, i’m just praying to the lord up above
why do we close our eyes when we pray or when we cry
well, i guess that’s hard

katie had squeezed alex’s hand and flatlined
couple weeks later, alex went to the grave
he still chained to her, now he feeling like a slave
and, he ain’t had no family, his dad caught aids
and katie’s momma left her by the road with a rose
what happened to the baby, well no n0body knows

look, alex walked up to the grave, drunk out of his mind
wishing he could go back in time
