a long time ago, before the earth was born, there was an island in the sky where the sky people lived, high in the heavens. their days came and went until one day, a tree broke and fell, piercing the sky with its broken branches, and which tore open a hole. sky woman, who was pregnant at the time, came upon this hole, and wondered how it got there and where it went. whеn she got close to it, so close, shе started to tumble into the hole. frightened, she tried grabbing at some of the plants at the edge so that they might save her from her fall. she reached out to the tobacco and strawberry plants, but they weren’t strong enough to hold her back. down and down she fell, tumbling and turning like a maple seed into the deep blue darkness, guided by the shaft of light coming from the sky world above. just then, a flock of geese had seen this extraordinary sight, and came swooping by to catch her. with outstretched wings, the birds cradled her fall, calling for a council of the creatures to help. while nestled in their wings, she watched as the great turtle offered his back for her to rest upon. startled, and yet full of wonder by this sudden arrival, many animals of the sea also came to help. the beavers, the loons, and muskrat scurried to find muds to bring up to the surface, and to pack on the great turtle’s back. night and day they dove and dove until they could create the ground on which the trees and plants would grow, including the strawberry and tobacco plants, which she had clutched when first she fell. and the sea creatures continued to dive into the ocean, gathering more and more mud, until the whole world had been made on the great turtle’s back. the light and sun from the sky world shone on all the plants, allowing them to grow and thrive, giving food back to all the creatures. grateful for all the gifts the animals offered and brought together, sky woman gave thanks as she danced and sang. she knew this was the time for her to give birth, and when she did, it was then she became the mother of all the people. ever since this time, we have known this land, and home, to be turtle island
