mary j. blige - my life (commentary) lyrics
[interlude]
woo, “my life.” the song is so crazy to me. it means so much to me for so many reasons. it was — this song was some of the first music i heard when i was a little baby. i was four years old when i first heard this record, and it made me feel exactly the way it makes me feel today. i just, as a kid, as a four+year+old, it just traveled with me all through my life, this music, from the time it comes on to the end to how i’m feeling right now just even explaining it to you, it just felt so good. it felt like life. it felt like so much life. and then, um, when i got older, i couldn’t find it anywhere. you know, the older i got, i couldn’t find this record. i couldn’t find this feeling that i felt for the first time as a little kid. and so i was searching all over for this song. i would go to clubs, i would do everything. as a teenager, i would try to — i would be trying to find this record, and even some djs would play it in the block parties but i could never get it from them. but it just had this feeling that i needed. i just needed, i needed it. it was medicine, it was healing. and then when i finally found it, i was on tour, and that music, like, i played it, like, repeatedly, over and over and over again. and it just — i just couldn’t stop playing, i wouldn’t stop playing. it was my life, it was what i needed. i was so depressed, i was so — i was going through so much, but that song, “everybody loves the sunshine” by roy ayers, it, man, i can’t explain what it does to me. but “everybody loves the sunshine” today just moves me like in a way that i can’t even, no other music really does. um, something really special about that, roy ayers, i don’t know what you did or what you was doing, but you, you worked some kind of a miracle with that record, and that record helped to save me in a lot of ways. so that’s why i said, “if you look at my life and see what i see,” i meant that. at that time, i wanted people to see just how heavy and sad and just all the different things i was going through, um, just to see in the eyes of a little girl in the inner city just going through hell and looking for love and can never find it. looking for love in herself — not even looking for loving herself at that moment ’cause she was so busy looking for love in everyone else, not even knowing that she was looking for herself. and that song just, there’s so many things attached to it. it’s one of my favorites. this is the bond between me and my fans, i believe, too, this song right here. so many stories come with this song. so many fans come up to me and say the “my life” song, “my life” song saved my life. so anyway, that’s the story behind “my life.”
