(it is the forest outside the beasts’s castle. the garden walls are covered in roses. father enters in front of the walls. he turns to go, but notices the roses on the walls.  thinking of the rose he promised to bring beauty, he reaches up and plucks one. as he does, the beast, roaring and furious, enters and confronts father. father falls to the ground at the sight of him and trembles with fear.)
