nancy elizabeth - early sleep lyrics

i’m not afraid of h+ll or the devil +
and because of it, all joy is torn from me
i don’t fool myself any longer
that i know anything worth knowing
i don’t fool myself any longer
that there is anything that i can teach
to make men better, give them faith;
besides, i’ve neither goods, nor gold
nor this world’s honor, nor its glory +
not even a dog would go on living this way!
so i have turned, instead, to magic:
the speech and power of the spirit
can teach me, surely, many secrets +
and i’ll no longer, sweating bitterly
keep mouthing all that i don’t know
i’ll learn what holds the world togеther
there at its inmost corе:
see the seeds of things, the power
and bargain in words no more

o light of the full moon, if only you saw my pain
for the last time! from this desk here
i’ve watched for you so many midnights;
then as now
sad friend, you rose over books and papers
if only i might walk upon the mountaintops
in your beloved light
soar with spirits through the mountain caverns
wander across the meadows in your twilight
[recited over the above:]
spring’s radiant life+giving look
has rescued river and stream from ice;
the bliss of hope greens every valley
old winter, his strength almost gone
withdraws into the rugged hills
and from them, fleeing, sends back weak
sleet showers that speckle the green plain
but the sun has no use for whiteness: growth
and effort are astir in everything
the sun brings earth to life with color +
and since the landscape has no flowers
uses the dressed+up folk instead

turn round; from this hilltop look back at the city
see, from the gateway’s cavernous gloom
there surges a many+colored throng
they’re eager to sun themselves, today
to celebrate the lord’s resurrection
for they themselves are resurrected:
from the mean houses’ dingy rooms
from the manacles of craft and trade
from the burden of roof and gable
from the streets’ suffocating narrowness
from the churches’ venerable night
they are all brought forth into the light
look now! only see how nimbly
the crowd spreads through the fields and gardens
many a boat is dancing on the stream;
look how, loaded till it almost sinks
the last barge sets off down the river
from the last paths of the mountain, even
the g+y dresses flash to our eyes
already i hear the uproar of the village
here is the people’s real heaven
young and old shout their contentment:
here i am, here i dare to be, human
