olivia o'bryan - tips for song writing (for the budding artists) lyrics
well, h-llo there, fellow artists! are you trying (and failing) at writing your first song? the first thing you need to do is look in the bottom of your heart. what are your feelings? keep a journal to keep track of what goes on in that fabulous life of yours so you can find what your songs can generally be about. for example, if you have a crush on that guy in school that just makes you feel like melting into a puddle of affection, write about what that guy makes you feel. the second thing you need to pay attention to is the main layout of the song. pay attention to most songs on the radio… they all rhyme! songs are basically poems. think about it. turn your feeling into a series of rhymes and patterns and just go with the flow. darn. i sound like a tree hugger don’t i. anyway, here is an example of how you can write it out…
all of me (by john legend)
[verse 1:]
what would i do without your smart mouth?
drawing me in, and you kicking me out
you’ve got my head spinning, no kidding, i can’t pin you down
what’s going on in that beautiful mind
i’m on your magical mystery ride
and i’m so dizzy, don’t know what hit me, but i’ll be alright
[pre-chorus:]
my head’s under water
but i’m breathing fine
you’re crazy and i’m out of my mind
[chorus:]
cause all of me
loves all of you
love your curves and all your edges
all your perfect imperfections
give your all to me
i’ll give my all to you
you’re my end and my beginning
even when i lose i’m winning
cause i give you all of me
and you give me all of you, ohoh
[verse 2:]
how many times do i have to tell you
even when you’re crying you’re beautiful too
the world is beating you down, i’m around through every mood
you’re my downfall, you’re my muse
my worst distraction, my rhythm and blues
i can’t stop singing, it’s ringing, in my head for you
[pre-chorus:]
my head’s under water
but i’m breathing fine
you’re crazy and i’m out of my mind
[chorus:]
cause all of me
loves all of you
love your curves and all your edges
all your perfect imperfections
give your all to me
i’ll give my all to you
you’re my end and my beginning
even when i lose i’m winning
cause i give you all of me
and you give me all of you, ohoh
[bridge:]
give me all of you
cards on the table, we’re both showing hearts
risking it all, though it’s hard
[chorus:]
cause all of me
loves all of you
love your curves and all your edges
all your perfect imperfections
give your all to me
i’ll give my all to you
you’re my end and my beginning
even when i lose i’m winning
cause i give you all of me
and you give me all of you
i give you all of me
and you give me all of you, ohoh
did you pay attention to the rhyme pattern? also, did you pay attention to how much of it was a message from the bottom of his heart? make sure your songs are from the bottom of your heart, sending out a message to everyone of what goes on in that beautiful head of yours. see, music is a great way to express yourself and your feelings. now, all you need to do is add a tune. you can hum it or strum it or chopstick it on the piano!
and now, you are finished! thank you, a-zlyrics.com for getting the lyrics for “all of me”, by john legend. and thank you (yes, you!) so much for reading my article, and comment your opinions and pointers for writing songs, if mine don’t work. good luck, young artist. i will be buying your hit songs on itunes!
