olson, sipe - sandstone skin lyrics

Loading...

gods of illusion with your sandstone skin
disintegrated a culture thinking you were destined to win
did you know you’re tricks were translucent to anyone but them?
did you know you ripped seams you didn’t even hem?

the gods of illusion are meant to be the europeans specifically the belgians, who colonized the african congo. one of their reasons for this was the fact that the africans were not white. during colonization they stripped the africans of their pride and culture they “ripped seems they didn’t even hem”
verse 2:
did you bat an eye at the blood shed?
as you bleached the congo to wash the blood stains away
did you cover your ears to shield them from the screams
from the cries of the people who thought you were gods?
did you realize you were devils when your wildfire spread?

this verse is about the mistreatment of the africans in the congo. the bleaching refers to the fact that europeans thought that they were “clean” and “pure” because they were white. the question in this verse is if the europeans felt bad as they colonized. during the process did they still think they were saints?

verse 3:
rivers polluted with greed and vain
undrinkable and untouchable and never will be same
with smoke in their lungs how can they chant?
how can they beg for the land you stole when you came into command?

the belgians were greedy and full of vain and pride when they colonized the congo. they destroyed the culture they didn’t understand and some of the effects were irreversible for many years after. the “smoke in their lungs” is about the isolation caused by colonization, they had no way to ask for help, and they had to suffer because of this

verse 4:
you stole their voice, their culture and pride
just because they didn’t share your sandstone skin
did you know you stunted the growth of the congo with your smog?
did you know your smoke and mirrors burned a hole in a culture?
didn’t you know that playing god puts your playmates in h-ll?

“playing god puts your playmates in h-ll” means that when the belgians came into the congo they were acting like gods and putting the africans through h-ll. they isolated, and destroyed the culture in the congo out of vain and greed
