peter gallway - i had a friend lyrics

Loading...

i had a friend who taught me poetry
he was out of the navy
he wore sandals and burned like a candle
for a whole year, it seems
he slept in a chair

and we all dreamed our dreams
we ate cheese puffs and drank beer
and there wasn’t time to stop
in the top of the morning

later on he traveled across the sand
across the sun
he dug far away places
dealing jokers and aces

while some of us tried
and some of us died
and somе re+awoke without warning
in the top of thе morning

then my friend for a time left poetry behind
he married an outlaw with his eye in a camera

and when i saw him again
with a gun in his hand
and in a state of siege
i said, “reality be d+mned”
i said, “reality indeed”
so now i have some of his poetry
that says, dear peter and sally
and while time is slipping by
my sally is no longer mine
i long to look him in his bearlike eye
for we both, the both of us
know the reasons why

we try and try
we breathe and die
my friend and i
we try and try
