puzzle world - another day of sun lyrics
fade in:
a sun+blasted sky. we hear radios on piece of music after another… we’re —
ext. lloyd bentsen highway + day
morning rush hour. sun beating dow, asphalt shimmering in the heat. the blown+out downtown houston hovers in the distance
we drift past more cars. hear one snippet of audio after another…
driver man taps her hand to prog rock on her headphones. driver women sings opera. driver man raps along to a hip hop track. we move from a radio interview to a french ballad to techno, until finally we begin to hear…
…a new, original piece of music… [another day of sun from la la land]
we settle on the car from which this new tune is play. vanesssa hums along to the riff on the radio — then starts singing
vanessa: (singing)
ba+ba+da+ba da+ba+da+ba
ba+ba+ba ba+da+ba+da+ba
ba+ba+ba ba
i think about that day
i left him at a greyhound station
west of santa fé
we were seventeen, but he was sweet and it was true
still i did what i had to do
’cause i just knew
summer; sunday nights
we’d sink into our seats
right as they dimmed out all the lights
a technicolor world made out of music and machine
it called me to be on that screen
and live inside each scene
then she exits her car. then — she starts moving down the lane
one by one, more drivers join her — singing and dancing along. without a single cut, we’ve found ourselves in a full+fledged musical number…
drivers: (singing)
without a nickel to my name
hopped a bus, here i came
could be brave or just insane
we’ll have to see
’cause maybe in that sleepy town
he’ll sit one day, the lights are down
he’ll see my face and think of how he…
…used to know me
climb these hills
i’m reaching for the heights
and chasing all the lights that shine
and when they let you down
you’ll get up off the ground
’cause morning rolls around
and it’s another day of sun
i hear ’em ev’ry day
the rhythms in the canyons
that’ll never fade away
the ballads in the barrooms
left by those who came before
they say “you gotta want it more”
so i bang on ev’ry door
and even when the answer’s “no”
or when my money’s running low
the dusty mic and neon glow
are all i need
and someday as i sing my song
a small+town kid’ll come along (points a alexis)
that’ll be the thing to push him on and go go
climb these hills
i’m reaching for the heights
and chasing all the lights that shine
and when they let you down
you’ll get up off the ground
’cause morning rolls around
and it’s another day of sun
as the instrument break kicks in, we spot alexis tinky in her beat+up convertible, her eyes widening at the sight of vanessa leading the impromptu performance
alexis tinky: may i? (smiling)
vanessa: (nods) of course!
alexis gets out of her car, her heart racing with excitement. she’s always loved the spotlight, and this is her moment, drivers leap on the car+tops, dance jerome robbin+style, making use of the road and the hot gleam of the automobiles. arms swaying, feet banging, dancers darting as the music blasts. taking the magic in…
alexis: (singing)
another day of sun
another day of fighting
to find my place in the sun
where the dreams are all made of gold
and when they let you down
the morning rolls around
drivers: (singing)
it’s another day of sun
it’s another day of sun
it’s another day of sun
it’s another day of sun
just another day of sun
it’s another day of sun
another day has just begun
it’s another day of sun
it’s another day of sun
finally — all the drivers swing back into their vehicles — and the song comes to a dramatic stop

int. alexis’ convertible + continuous
alexis takes a deep breath, her heart still racing from the spontaneous performance. she turns to vanessa, who’s beaming from ear to ear
alexis: aunt vanessa, that was… amazing
vanessa: (laughing) oh, it’s just a little something to keep the spirits high in this dreadful traffic
alexis: no, i mean it. you’ve still got it. the way you lead everyone…
vanessa: (winks) i’ve had my moments in the past, dear. but it’s not about me. it’s about the dream
alexis nods, her eyes reflecting the hope that fuels her own dreams
vanessa: so, tell me, what’s your big plan for taking houston by storm?
alexis: (determined) i’m going to make it in the music industry. write hits, perform them, the whole deal
vanessa: (smiling warmly) that’s the spirit! but you know, this town can be tough. you’ll need more than talent. you’ll need guts and a whole lot of luck
alexis: i’ve got plenty of guts. can we go to houston our hometown?
vanessa: (nods thoughtfully) houston, yes! let’s do it
