unbreakable trilogy lyrics
verse one:
i’m gonna tell you a story
about an m. night shyamalan trilogy
the order goes unbreakable, split, and glass

i’ll +n+lyze it clearly
through a lens of disability
spoilers ahead, but hey, it’s for my class

the first movie is unbreakable
kind of a bruce willis vehicle
featuring samuel jackson as his nemesis

it’s got a lot of problems
but the biggest one of all of them
is that the villain suffers from osteogenesis
the good guy in the spotlight
has had health and strength his whole life
and thus the villain labels him a hero

it’s ableist and rude
to conflate strength with being good
but shyamalan’s concerns seem to be zero

chorus:
the moral of my story
is if you have a disability
it does not automatically mean you’re a villain

if they don’t provide a motive
beyond a condition of the body or mind
it’s actually a plot hole that needs fillin’

verse two:
now i’ll give you an earful
about the very first “stealth sequel”
this one takes us on a different spin

james mcavoy stars as a guy
diagnosed with did
he’s got 23 alters within
although he’s pretty “healthy”
albeit only physically
he’s got a secret predatory plan

to unleash one last alter
otherwise known as “the beast”
and transcend beyond the average man

he kidnaps three teenagers
but not to throw a rager
he wants to feed them to this final alter

but after k!lling two of them
and going for the third
he learns something new and so he falters

the heroine of the three
has got a case of ptsd
and she coped with her feelings by self+harming

because she has known pain
the beast decides to free her
the subtext of this act is less than charming

chorus:
the moral of my story
is if you have a disability
it does not automatically mean you’re a villain
if they don’t provide a motive
beyond a condition of the body or mind
it’s actually a plot hole that needs fillin’

but wait: there’s more! key change!

verse three:
the culmination movie
is anything but groovy
it once again shames not one but both bad guys

it turns out that the first guy
in his quest to find a hero
creates the second bad guy in the franchise

the ultimate betrayal
is in sarah paulson’s portrayal
of an agent silencing those “others”

it’s a metaphor but poor
about the “abnormals” next door
and i’m just grateful that there’s not another (movie that is)

chorus:
the moral of my story
is if you have a disability
it does not automatically mean you’re a villain

if they don’t provide a motive
beyond a condition of the body or mind
it’s actually a plot hole that needs fillin’
