rose droll - cat june lyrics

Loading...

[intro]
a woman stood in her small open kitchen
pouring coffee into a mug
when she heard a knock at the door
her hand shook, spilling coffee on the floor
she moved her foot over the spill and dried it with her sock
she wiped around the mug with the sleeve of her white sweater
and made her way across the kitchen and opened the apartment door

a middle+aged man in a blue uniform stood in the doorway holding two large canvas bags as tall as his waist
she took a step toward the door
to get the man on the mat
look at the mail on the floor and took another step back
and like the fish in the bowl that mom left to die
she took the bag from the man and let the gutter decide

spiller her drink on the floor
dried it up with her sock
shifter her sweater and let the mailman talk
and with the sweet in her eye
just like miranda july
receded back like a shadow and gave her best reply:

we’ll float like leaves in the eternal breeze
but tonight they’re shaking pretty hard and falling on their knees
so i pretend to have read what they write and send
bend the truth, break a tooth
but these folks need a friend

he took a step in the door
threw the bag to the right
and there it sits with the rest stacked 20 feet high
she took the coffee from the pot
held the cup to him and said
“all they need is love even if it’s pretend”
“okay cat june,” he nodded
“i don’t understand, but my wife back home is like your biggest fan
i won’t tell anybody anything i promise you that
you’re a good egg, june, and god bless you and your “cat””

we’ll float like leaves in the eternal breeze
but tonight they’re shaking pretty hard and falling on their knees
so i pretend to have read what they write and send
bend the truth, break a tooth
but these folks need a friend

there’s always someone left out
one kid against the wall
watching the others and pretending they’re not bothered at all
a cat in a bag
thrown over overpasses
and a gandhi to guide the gilded, shy, and troubled masses

and if you try and spy with your third eye
the faint fl!cker of suicide in the quietest guy
it’s really not that hard
he’s really not that rare
you see all we need is to believe someone cares

we’ll float like leaves in the eternal breeze
but tonight they’re shaking pretty hard and falling on their knees
so i pretend to have read what they write and send
bend the truth, break a tooth
but these folks need a friend
