songdog - pilgrim hill lyrics
i’ve been walking the streets all day till long gone
sunset, i felt the devil flap his wings on pilgrim
hill,
there’s dead flowers in cellophane stacked up on the
pavement
and all my heart’s voices are counting off the choices
i didn’t make,
all the chances i didn’t take.
there’s a song in my head, something ancient by some
one-hit wonder,
i find a bench in the park and feed the pigeons my
stale cheeseburger,
i stop and listen to a busker murder “halellujah” —
man you should’ve heard her —
i saw two dead foxes by the hotdog-stand, the sky’s the
colour of a milkshake and the hip-flask in my hand
ran out an hour ago …………….
i called by to see joe at the infirmary, took him an
old nme from the glam-rock days,
but the ghost propped up on pillows must be just joe’s
shadow,
and there’s no way back to any safe place
and i’m twirling in deep sp-ce alone,
like that song said: no direction home…..
so i kill some time in a second-hand bookstore
run by this albino guy with a head shaped like a
hallowe’en pumpkin.
i stand at the window watching the wind rolling a c-ke
can.
i came across this postcard — i slipped it in my bag
—
of a squad of gis raising that iwo jima flag.
but i left it lying in some bar ……
