spaza - we got a lot a work to do lyrics
we started off with a protest
we ended with the struggle for liberation
by the end of that protest
it was clear that it was not only about africans
it was about this ultimate struggle for liberation
but it maybe comes with, how can you defeat
preparation in lots of different ways?
by being creative
by still being what they don’t want us to be
and this is waist+deep because what i think becomes really important
because it’s about they want us to be
sort of, uh, the image of what it means to be black, nеgro, you know
and not a different image of what it mеans to be black
and so, in that way, we think you’re defeating apartheid
the gods are agreeing with us
’76 still today is credited with how we changed south, brought change to south africa
and who carried ’76?
the young people of the black consciousness movement of those days
and we’ll boldly say that
and that is why i’ll forever, i’ll forever
i’ll forever respect people like solomon mahlangu
who told his mother
that, “ayy, mama, the tree of liberation shall be nurtured by the blood of martyrs”
i think twenty+one years into our democracy
it, it becomes really clear that really little of, um, the apartheid structures
in our society have, have changed, um
some people have been able to escape, uh
and become part of, um, um, middle class
and reenter our society through being part of either government or business
but for the great majority of people, we are still living, uh, in racialized ghettos
and your life ain’t worth sh+t
i don’t care how many mercedes benzes you have
if it doesn’t add to the collective development of your people
