speed on the beat - death of the king "alternate chronology" lyrics

Loading...

hey guys and girls, speed on the beat here. by now, i hope you’ve checked out death of the king. if not, i’m a bit disappointed in you. not really, but still. so, if you have checked out the album, you’ll notice that the album does play out chronologically. i reflect, go insane, get sanity back, and call it a day–all without placing blame on females or anything. however, death of the king is also meant to be played out of the listed order. when i started dotk, i wanted to showcase it as speed on the beat in a mental inst-tute, considering about half of the lyrics were written while i…was in a mental health facility in late 2013. with that said, the alternative order is as follows:

1) religious politics (losing faith in humanity)
2) 500 days of summer (losing faith in self)
3) come and get it (losing sanity) featuring dugee buller
4) the mental breakdown (interlude)
5) cleanse (tormented soul)
6) dreaming (the breakthrough)
7) do better (dar remix)
8) death of the king
9) money where yo’ mouth is
10) thanatos (stories through music)
11) keep integrity, never guises (thanatos’ reprise)
12) redemption’s reprise

with this order, we come in with speed on the beat (the character in dotk and myself) already at the peak of the manic episode. he’s lost faith in everything, he’s drinking and fighting and just being “unhinged.” it reaches a head with the same song (“the mental breakdown”) and eventually he starts to discuss what’s really going on. that’s how we get to cleanse and dreaming. “cleanse” before “dreaming” furthers the idea of my denial/misdiagnoses with regards to my mental illness. it also showcases some of the things that’ve probably caused me to be reluctant to trust people and the like

after “the breakthrough,” i’m on the verge of being released from the facility as i’m “do[ing] better,” regardless of whatever. but, there is still one more thing to do: “k!ll the king,” this illusion of grandeur. if i’m to help myself–and others–i have to be me and keep integrity, never guises. after k!lling the king, i’m able to more adeptly tell people to put their money where their mouth is and prompt change. these changes, in some ways, i’m provoking through my musical stories. and at the end of the day, i’m in a better place. i’m not as hung up on the past, and i’m actually doing better. redemption’s reprise begins around christmas 2013 and takes us up to around the time of the album’s completion (june 2014). i’m doing better, i’m getting sh-t straight, and i’m not letting this bipolar disorder diagnosis define me
