spoken word - i am not circumcised - abhishek mishra lyrics
phase 1
i am not circ-mcised
i think that might be why i am alive
why i was able to survive in a country where
the foreskin on my p-n-s was actually my lifeline
i grew up hating muslims, that’s the way i was socialized
in grade 5, i fought one; he got suspension on sight
but i still came to school next day like everything was alright
i guess in that scenario: i was the cop and he was the black guy
i feel so dumb for starting that fight
man i should’ve sympathized
i shouldn’t have been a stand-by
i should have been an ally
but i was too busy enjoying my privilege and joy
while my people burned alive little muslim girls and boys
my culture owned the evil and i was employed
probably why i abandoned my home city like its detroit
yeah, i left that dump, jumped on plane and landed in the six
tables turned, turns out that i am no more rich
what happened? we thought we were chasing the american dream?
i guess dad could afford to pay for clothes just not supreme
turns out the west is actually extremely religious
teenagers rocking true religion like they truly religious
materialism is the norm, be greedy and ambitious
mom works 2 jobs, she’s sleepy, and she needs rest
even if i can, obtain wealth and fame
what’s to say i won’t end up like kate spade?
i didn’t sleep all night; anxiety all up in my head
yet 9:00 am they hand me a f-cking calculus test?
my dad thinks depressions’ a hoax
and my mom thinks it’s a phase
my sister thinks i am faking it
what a f-cking cliché
thank god my girlfriend gets me; i guess she’s been through the pain
mental illness is real, destigmatize it, f-ck the shame
phase 2
in a world full of inequity, injustice and evils
the one that’s most against my morals is hatred against queers
its immature and its none of your business to mind
to judge what two people do in their own time
judge the way they walk or judge the way they dress
judge the way they talk, judge the emotions they express
and don’t you dare tell me it doesn’t happen any more, “oh its 2018, we have accepted them all”
coz if i wore pink pants and walked through this hall, i’d be stared at like i am 7 feet tall
“but the media is inclusive tho! its getting better bro!”
oh really? then why are your favorite rappers still haters tho? tyler the creator yo
eminem and j cole, travis scott and migos (jenkins, 2017)
and 0 openly g-y athletes in all of 4 major league sports:
nba & nfl, mlb & nhl (buzinski, 2018)
still believe in inclusion? i think that’s a major league l
but i still have to be hopefully that somehow it will get better
like lgbt sportsafe which is an inlusion program that trains athletic administrators to have special supports for g-y athletes (lgbt sportssafe, 2018)
or rappers like kevin abstract that rap about being g-y because not enough rappers rap and be g-y (chesman, 2017)
to my surprise he is extremely accepted in the rap community, this signals that perhaps we are moving towards immunity
