Loading...

[instrumental intro]

[verse 1]
come all you good people that go out a+tippling
i pray you give attention and listen to my song
i’ll sing you a story of a jolly bold robber
seven feet high, in proportion quite strong

[verse 2]
he’s robbed lawyer morgan and old lady dawkings
five hundred bright guineas from each one of them
and as he was a+walking, he spied a young sailor
and boldly as a lion he slewed up to him

[verse 3]
“deliver your money, you saucy young sailor
you’ve plenty of gold in your pockets i see”
“oh yes,” says the sailor, “i’ve plenty of money
and while i have life then i have none for thee”

[verse 4]
“i’vе just left my ship, gave the prеss gang the slip
and i’m off into london my sweetheart to see
i’ve forty bright sovereigns to pay our sweet lodgings
and i pray you, jolly robber, don’t you take them from me”
[verse 5]
then the robber caught hold of the saucy young sailor
a blow like a poleaxe felled him to the ground
“oh yes,” said the sailor, “you’ve struck me quite heavy
and now i will endeavour to return it again”

[verse 6]
so then both they stripped and like tigers they skipped
and they fought life for life like the soldiers in field
but the ninety+eighth meeting it was their completing
and the jolly bold robber the sailor has k!lled

[verse 7]
and down then he looked on the blood+stained old robber
“i hope you’ll not lay any blame onto me”
“for if i had just lifted a thousand bright guineas
i’m d+mned if i’d have stopped a poor sailor like me”

[instrumental outro]
