the irish brigade – kevin barry lyrics

Loading...

[intro]
on the 14th of october in the year 2001
after 80 years interred within prison walls
ten forgotten heroes were reburried with full military honours
they now lie with ireland’s patriot dead in glasnevin cemetary in dublin
thomas whelan, patrick moran, patrick doyle, bernard ryan, frank flood, james byran, patrick maher, thomas traynor, edmond foley
and an 18 old year student from carlo kevin barry

[verse 1]
in mountjoy jail one monday morning
high upon the gallows tree
kevin barry gave his young life
for the cause of liberty
just a lad of 18 summers
yet thеre’s no one can deny
as hе walked to death that morning
he proudly held his head up high

[verse 2]
just before he faced the hangman
in his dreary prison cell
british soldiers tortured barry
just because he would not tell
all the names of his brave comrades
and other things they wished to know
“turn informer or we’ll k!ll you!”
proudly barry answered “no!”
[verse 3]
won’t you shoot me like a soldier
do not hang me like a doll
for i fought to free old ireland
on that (???) september ‘morn

[verse 4]
all around their little bakery
where we fought them hand to hand
shoot me like an irish soldier
for i fought to free ireland

[verse 5]
calmly standing to attention
while he bade his last farewell
to his broken hearted mother
who’s sad grieve no one can tell
for the cause he proudly cherished
this sad parting had to be
then to death walked softly smiling
that old ireland might be free

[verse 6]
another martyr for old ireland
another murder for the crown
whose brutal laws may k!ll the irish
but can’t keep their spirits down
[verse 7]
lads like barry are no cowards
from the foe they will not fly
lads like barry will free ireland
for her sake they’ll live and die
