the monocles - disjunct concerto lyrics
i wrote a concerto inspired by the perfectly harmonized paranoia
can it be heard?
there’s the cello of movement number one
describing the overbearing friction
the impact of homeless jazz upon reality
stalking a loved one who is life’s true beauty
i bet the initial melody was the sound of a social recluse
i bet the whole tone scale represented a noose
but it never got put to good use
because the harmony suggested that it wasn’t too romantic
now the noose is gone, but the figure’s still there
standing behind a shed looking for beauty to stare…
there’s a repeated note, a constant
showing how beauty is numb
but numb to pain is not numb to worry, not numb to scare
as the music crescendos, awareness amplifies because of a flat two clash
all of the notes slowly rise…
the figure is lurking to a gentle pizzicato
approaching a home that is not its own
it sneaks in through the front door
unnoticed by all except for beauty
beauty hears a door slam and lightswitches flicker
or better put, the pressure of the bow against the strings
and the sound of how the notes ring out
beauty grabs a knife from the nightstand
opens the bedroom door
tiptoes down the twelve step staircase
listens for creaks in the floor
voices are heard
but they’re from ghosts, past lives
the real figure preys in silence
it feeds off the search for light
“please will you find me and put me to rest, will you find me and put me to rest?
the shadows are painful and dismal at best, would you put me to rest?
i’d do it myself but fate does not allow me to
so tighten your grip, let the dissonance sing, and let the weapon go through”
