i wrote these lyrics in 1977
i was in stinson beach, working (with mr. carothers) at the home of a cbs vice president
the lyrics came to me and i went out to sit in my truck and put pen to paper

the first verse is based on a then recent visit to a well to do, suburban, friend’s house

business people with long hair
my friend had long hair at the time and is a businessman. i thought to myself “times have changed, not that long ago, a businessman wouldn’t be caught dead with long hair”

hiding plastic things everywhere
i noticed a lot of things in their house looked like they were metal, stone or wood, but they were really only made of plastic

recording shows while they’re not there
vcrs were just getting popular. my friends already had a collection of video tapes of tv shows they recorded on timer

once they’ve got it, they don’t care
my friend mentioned once they record them they hardly ever watch them
