the passage (uk) - the great refusal lyrics
there’s this road they keep talking about
there’s this orchard at the end
we’ll all travel down the road
down this road and into the orchard
and most of us will pick the fruit (wood still grows)
and some of us will wash the fruit (night still dies)
and most of them will eat the fruit (glass still breaks)
and some of us will grow more fruit (men still lie)
for most of them to eat (women still lie)
(and we’ll eat what they leave)
and it’s all worked out who does what
it’s in a book, printed out
writings of the owner of the orchard
the obscure owner of the orchard
they have it, they have this book
they once held it out, we took a look
we saw white pages, empty sheets
the print was invisible (so discrete)
they gave us copies, one for each
of paper (made from the orchard trees)
and they learnt us, taught us how to read
explained to us what it all means
the written words were so unclear
we didn’t have the first idea
they said that all we need to know was
some live high and most live low:
so most of us will pick the fruit (wood still grows)
and some of us will wash the fruit (night still dies)
and most of them will eat the (fruit glass still breaks)
and some of us will raise more fruit (women still lie)
for most of them to eat (men still lie)
(it’s there for you to read)
and so they said: walk down the road
direct to the orchard at the end
we walked around in lines of ten
but couldn’t find the path they meant
there were hundreds of us on the route
packed too tight to get a view
of any road that took us straight
to the new beginning at the orchard gate
so then we stopped and looked around (ignorance trickles down)
we’d covered every inch of ground (from the top)
we hoped that they would point the way (to the base)
they weren’t around, we searched all day (double standards)
but we hadn’t hunted hard enought (private jokes)
we’d looked ahead but not above (make them fall apart next door)
that pain, those headaches, we should’ve known (tell your neighbour what they’re for)
they stood over our heads and we were their road
we don’t need your fruit: we want sense
we don’t need your book: we want words
we don’t need your road: we want the air
(so most of us refused)
they can’t work out what they’re doing
they’re running away down the road to ruin
let’s set the pace on the road to ruin (it’s another place for us)
keep straight ahead on the road to ruin (it’s a different place for us)
don’t take your eyes off the road to ruin (it’s a starting point for us)
you’ll never tire out on the road to ruin (it’s a starting point for us)
the people inside you, all the voices inside you
sing out for the great refusal
