erika badu, motives & thoughts
written by angela brown

we live in a country divided by ways of confusion of illusions of biased maze. sometimes we find are way from this loss sinceless path, only to hope to find our way back. this world is caught up with unsound ways and means that the hope for mankind becomes our dream and the final resolution is the theme we sing we need a revolution by all means
what are our motives and thoughts? question what makes us act the way we do? this is the question in erica badu’s poem, motives and thoughts. erica is writing about a revolution to end seclusion in society’s woes
erika image on stage is seclusive seriousness look. she wears all black african dishiki and her hair is natural. she approaches the podium with a book in her hand. when she speaks the audience is silent. the audience wants to understand the message erika is conveying. erika uses colloquial speech. her word choice is very wise and articulate. erika is a positive role model
erika is known for her music. she talks gravely on culture on a spiritual level. in her work she questions morality. in this poem she questions our motives and thoughts. are our motives and thoughts by choice? if our motives are wrong, we can change. our motives are the choices we make
erika states using oxymorons to explain the consequences of our actions are contrary to belief. she asks if social delusions are human conditions that are morally corrupt. she compares mythology to folklore and psychology to woes that don’t heal. there is a message that erika relates to her audience. in erika perspective we live in a corrupt world
erika uses word patterns of near rhyme and meter. each line of her poem has the same measurements and rhyme scheme. she interacts with her audience using her logical, intellect with adjectives and dangling participles that create the body of the poem. the poem teaches the mind to listen at the facts in how they apply to you. erika’s last comment in her poem asks the audience a message to ponder their thoughts with an emotional response when she asks her audience to understand motives have a consequence
