bling: the rise and fall of an american icon
everybody knows bling. the hip hop staple of videos, interviews and photo shoots is possibly hip hops most popular export. presidential candidates name check it with one poster saying this marked the end of its usage in the vernacular, and rappers even named themselves after it. stupid you may think. but we know stupider
the rise of bling is linked to the reagan era. reagan inspired a whole culture of greed and self achievement. the hero of the seventies was rocky- a blue collar bum becoming the embodiment of the american dream, the hero for the working man or woman trying to make something of themselves. the 80’s movie icon – gordon gekko who is all slime and oil, leering over former working cl-ss heroes as he proclaimed that ‘greed is good.’ this is the context in which the second generation of mc’s were thrust. a world that aimed for wealth yet oppressed the poor who dared to grasp. but i digress, to learn more about reagans politics and how they affected hip hop, as well as other things, including the iran-contra affair, read this blog post by mattpulver. it will blow your mind
