[spoken: duncan garner]
international waters, the lesser known wild west when it comes to arms dealing, illegal
slavery and much much more. and this kind of journalist ian urbina has sailed
the seven seas for the last 15 months on a mission to uncover lawlessness on
the water and he joins us now. fascinating stuff, ian welcome to the program

[spoken: ian urbina]
thanks for having me

[spoken: duncan garner]
nice to see you. now tell me, what have you been doing for the last two years?

[instrumental]

[spoken: duncan garner]
what did you see? what were some of the worst things you saw?

[spoken: ian urbina]
murder caught on camera, abuse of stowaways, intentional dumping of oil at sea more in
the order of the bp spill, you know every year more oil is dumped, arms dealing, sea slavery, human trafficking

[spoken: duncan garner]
can i get back to the murder?

[instrumentals]
[spoken: duncan garner]
what happened, where were you?

[spoken: ian urbina]
so, i actually was not on the ship where the murder occurred. i was given footage of this murder that was filmed on a cellphone camera. it was unclear as to where it occurred, but we investigated it. and it turned out that it was in the indian ocean and on the footage it was 10 minutes, 26 seconds of a sort of slow+motion slaughter. two men with semi+automatic on one ship essentially picked off these guys in the water who were attempting to flee and ultimately it looks like this was a clash between fishing boats that ended quite violently, and to this day no government has been willing to investigate. it looks like these were taiwanese tuna longliners

[spoken: duncan garner]
and this is the problem isn’t it, because when you’re out on these international waters, there’s no police officers

[instrumental]

[spoken: duncan garner]
so why did you start this? what did you want to prove?

[spoken: ian urbina]
i kind of wanted to explore+ when you think of lawlessness at sea most people
think of two things, captain phillips, somali piracy and the bp spill. having worked on ships i knew there was a lot more going on out there so i thought it
was good to bring readers out into that sp+ce. and that was as much as i knew
and wanted to do, and it was meant to be a year long endeavor and now we are in our third year
