“now, we’re moving up here from 1920s. we’re gonna go to, uh, an old friend of ours named calvin coolidge. now calvin coolidge is not the kind of fellow you would invite to a party, ’cause he didn’t say much. he once said, ‘i have never been hurt by something i did not say.’ [audience laughter] there’s a famous story—probably apocryphal—of, uh, one of these receptions at the white house, y’know, president, missus, and the first lady shook hands, ‘everybody, how do you do, welcome to the white housе, how do you do, welcome to the whitе house, nice to see you’, so on. these two fellas watching, one fella says, ‘that coolidge, you can’t get two words out of him.’ other fella says, ‘oh, i can get more than two words.’ ‘you see, i bet you a hundred dollars, you won’t get him to say more than two words.’ ‘oh, nothing to it.’ he gets on the line, says, ‘mr. president, i wanna be very candid with you—see that fellow over there? i have a hundred dollar bet with him that i can get you to say more than two words.’ big smile. coolidge looks at him and says, ‘you lose.’ [audience laughter]”
