the pine box boys – mighty, mighty preacher lyrics

Loading...

[verse 1]
he was a mighty, mighty preacher, he tended to our needs
his sermon had the spirit and his liquor held a bead
he spoke with tongues of fire; you could smell it when he breathed
kept a bottle in his boot and a bible in his hands
a pistol in his pocket and he rode across the land
held meetings in the summer; you could hear “the angel band”
we thought we knew what he would do when he rode in to town
the pistol had a notch or two that no one could account
and that he’d never fess up to

[verse 2]
he was rough around the edges, i reckon he done time
whatever was the reason, ain’t none of yours or mine
so he sold a little whiskey. h-ll, that shouldn’t be a crime
and all that other stuff, does it need to be said?
i’m sure he had a reason if he shot them fellars dead
he wouldn’t even be here if they drew first instead
by and by, said “why you keep that roscoe in your belt?”
’twas needed for some freedom from the pressures that he felt
of all them other so-called “preachers” trying to muscle in on his flock
it’s a god-eat-god world out there and it pays to pack

[verse 3]
the folks around these parts said he was sent here by the lord
that he rode in on a twister and i believe every word
he turned water into whiskey. well, at least that’s what i’ve heard
take a little of his liquor and swaller all it down
send you higher than the heavens, you can have a look around
next morning will be h-ll, lord, your head will pound
he said he had a sermon and a church was all he lacked
and he would preach for free if he could keep a still out back
and them meetings with the elders tended to run a little long
they were getting filled with a mighty, mighty spirit

[narration]
the stranger walked ahead, it was cold there in the night
so he grabbed the cage and coffin and he caught up there beside him
by and by, they p-ssed a church and it was filled with light
he recognized the melody and it sure was inviting

he took a pew in the back just as they were praying
their eyes all closed and their hands up a-reaching
a man took the pulpit, as the “amen”s they were saying
said his name was prester john and he commenced to preaching

he had something in a gl-ss, he threw it back and gulped it
he opened up a bible and said the text was judges
he pulled out his pistol and laid it on the pulpit
he said, “until i’m finished, not a soul budges.”
